Haiku

on foggy days

each rock makes promises

broken by waves

in silence

a leaf falls

through the light

red roses scattered

the shore a silent witness

gulls overhead

a low flying vulture

considers his options

my eyes, shaded

5 Haikus

leaves growing green

deeper than lost shadows

birdsong soundtrack

bleached driftwood sleeping

blanketed by swaying grass

a chorus of frogs

the pull of the beach

an ocean mesmereized

toes curl in the sand

blossoms punctuate

this animated landscape

spring revelation

intertidal echoes

resonate against the sand

gulls soar overhead

waiting for moonrise

a heron creeps the tideline

pulling a promise

rain beats a blue song

from clouds rubbing shoulders

your smile, a sunbeam

Hat Parade

playfully the wind

pulls the bowler from my head

pirouetting I snatch it back

edges softened

by ten gallons of rain

broad enough for a dry neck

this hotel lobby

has many ways to spend money

I gamble on a hat

autumn is perfect

for sacrificial wicker

Brooks Brothers throwback

in Montreal for work

I find a shrine for hats

Borsalino paradise

on a forest walk

spiders fall from overhead

evading swallows

I don’t wear ballcaps

give me a fedora instead

it rains, I smile

at the front door

I ponder which hat to wear

children laugh outside

unleashed, her hair

flies triumphantly up

a golden crown

woven cedar strips

bridging cultures and form

one more seagull target

silhouetted

crisp brim unmistakable

it’s the police

I find a feather

its beauty calls me skyward

to mourn lost flocks

snowmen bleed out

flooding paths with memories

smiles return to earth

raindrops ripcord

into snowflakes stuttering

frozen hearts thaw

tethered wind surfers

fly plunging between currents

lone footprints in sand

against darkness

the flashlight beam freezes

snowflakes dancing

in darkness I wake

to the light of your soul

illuminating mine

perching, a cormorant

is a question on the water

marking time and place

others stay attached

stalked by a premonition

My thoughts slow to a trickle

Evaporating

I hold back my tears

No need to open floodgates

Inside, I’m crying

Calm simplicity

Becomes a revelation

Now tranquility

From being picked the heart waits

To become unlocked

Tranquil in calmness

Unfretted and unburdened

Serenity now

Trees bend branches close
