Songs

Little Brown Rooster

Little brown rooster

Sings the blues all day

Calling for his little hens

Singing that he wants to play

He struts and dances

They dance away

Little brown rooster

Sings the blues all day

Little brown rooster

Sings the blues all day

As nighttime falls

Things fade to black

That hen house is hopping

Like a jumped up Cadillac

Little brown rooster

Don’t sing the blues at night

He’s too busy dancing

With those hens and getting tight

Little brown rooster

Don’t wake up at dawn

He only gets up at half past jazz

With a quiet kind of yawn

Little brown rooster

Sings the blues all day

Little brown rooster

Sings the blues all day

Clear

I’ve got to clear my mind

I’ve got to cleanse my soul

I need to heal my heart

If the truth be told

I need to quell the voices

That echo in my head

I need to stop each passing thought

Just empty out instead

Just take a breath

Then blow it out

Remember how to really be

Accept each moment gracefully

I’ve got to clear my mind

I’ve got to cleanse my soul

I need to heal my heart

If the truth be told

Maybe

Maybe I’ll never touch you

Maybe we’ll never meet

But tonight we’re together babe

Tonight when we’re asleep

‘Cuz I’ll meet you in my dreams

Tonight when we’re asleep

[instrumental]

You send me all those messages

You send me all those posts

I like you on Facebook babe

And I’d like you here tonight

But you are long away and unattainable

Even though it feels so right

Tonight when we’re asleep

[instrumental]

So maybe I’ll never meet you

Maybe we’ll never meet

But tonight we’re together babe

Tonight when we’re asleep

And tonight I reach out and I hold you

With my words and with my mind

Tomorrow is a promise

We will answer, both in kind

Voices

Disembodied voices

Talking back and forth

Don’t ever really know you

But that’s not the point

We intersect ideas

Toss the ball back and forth

We come from the south

We come from the north

We hook up on Facebook

And chat back and forth

Post comments with innuendo

And flirt shamelessly

We’re disembodied voices

Talking back and forth

Don’t ever really know you

But that’s not the point

We strip away the pretense

Pull back the veil

Stand naked at the window

It’s all revealed

We’re disembodied voices

Talking back and forth

Don’t ever really know you

But that’s not the point

So I keep on posting everything

That comes into my mind

Just waiting for the hook that might

Reach out and make you mine

We’re disembodied voices

Talking back and forth

Don’t ever really know you

But that’s not the point

Perfect

A perfect view

From a perfect spot

But I’m here alone

Where you are not

And I’ve got my freedom

On the rising tide

Got my hopes and dreams

That a pin could pop

That’s when I remember

The way you looked

That’s when I remember

The strength it took

To move on

Past the bitter end

Swallow my defeat

And walk away again

A perfect view

From a perfect spot

I’m here alone again

Where you are not

So I hunker down

In the bitter wind

Put one foot in front the other

‘Til the corner’s turned

It’s a perfect view

And a perfect spot

I’m here alone again

Where you are not

Blank Page

Another blank page

Another weary day

Another day without you

Anyway

And now it really hits

As the train whistle calls

I hear your name

As the thunder roars

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

I heard you moved

Into somewhere new

Threw our life away

Hooked up with someone who

Shook up your sense of self

Got you off that dusty shelf

Lives a life that’s really flash

But that’s not where your soul is at

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

And I love you anyway

Even though you went away

You left me for a better chance

Cut me off with just one dance

I fell down, I admit I cried

Just a foolish man

Who cheated and lived a lie

Just an ordinary man

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl come on home to me

Give another chance to we

Cuz you and I make something else

Together we are more than just ourselves

With you I love

With you I thrive

You make me laugh

And without you I’m less than half

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

Girl, why did you go away

You said you’d always stay

With You

I want to get hot and wet

With you

Surrender to the force

To the current

With you

Plunge into the melt

And float and drift

Getting roasted

Even as we chill

With you

I want to run the rapids

Bouncing off the rocks

With you

I want to drift past gardens

Then along into the forest

With you

I want to get hot and wet with you

Lie back and let the river carry us away

I want to get hot and wet with you

Lie back and let the river carry us away

I want to get hot and wet with you

Lie back and let the river carry us away

Shadowboxer

I am a shadowboxer of distinction

But I know I’ll never win

Going toe to toe with my reflection

Is bound to do me in

Yet I step into the ring again

Think I’ll box another round

Every time you leave me hanging

Each time you turn me down

It starts with second guessing

All that stuff that echoes in my head

And soon enough it escalates

Till I’m fighting me instead

Yes I’m just a shadowboxer

Throwing punches in the air

Landing knockout blows on nothing

Just grasping straws that never were

My arguments are all inside

The dialogue is pointed

The things I did I now regret

And too many disappointed

I am a shadowboxer of distinction

But I know I’ll never win

Went toe to toe with my reflection

And its left me all done in

Moment

It was a moment

Just another moment

On a regular day

It must have been this moment

Cuz’ they’re all the same

It must have been this moment

Cuz’ it’s when I saw you

And that moment

That moment that I saw you

Wasn’t just the same

Our eyes locked, when you saw me

Our eyes locked as I looked at you

Our eyes shone as something new

Blew away the cobwebs

Blew away the past

And even though there was lots of folks

Around us, moving here and there

It was concentrated

Just you and me

As we gazed and looked

Into each other’s eyes

And sighed a thousand sighs

Said hello, goodbye

Even as we recognized

A synchronicity of mind

But we left that all behind

Returning to today

Leaving adventures untried

Questions never sprung

Goodbye before it’s done

It’s done

Road Music

I was on the road and lonesome

I was in a little town

Heard a rumour of an open mike

In a bar not far along

I settled in with a frosty draft

As the emcee took the stage

And soon enough the singers sang and the players played

It was a quirky hit parade

As I sat there listening, soaking up the atmosphere

From out of the crowd, a girl got up

And threaded her way through the tables to the floor but dance is too small a word for what she came there for

And the singers strummed the chords to ballads fast and slow

While hypnotically each song was now accompanied by an improv hula dancer stationed over on the side

Now we weren’t in Hawaii or anywhere close

But she swayed and she shimmied

My eyes hugged her close

As I watched her I got into her interpretive space

And thought “how engaging! It’s crazy!”

Some of us need music

Just like fish need water

And birds need to ride the wind

Music didn’t make Mazlow’s list, but it’s an elemental urge

Some of us feel the rhythm

And some of us have the blues

But every tune that comes along

Feeds something deep within

And music can wash us, like a gentle rain falls

Or it can blow us away with a hurricane’s roar

It’s a force of nature, it’s a natural law

Unlocking the soul with freedom’s song

It’s more than just background

And never white noise

Each song is a wonder, a clarion sound

Music tugs on your heartstrings

It can make grown men cry

It’ll set your feet dancing and toes start to tapping

From just a few notes drifting by

It expresses emotion and provokes them in you

Every life needs a soundtrack, familiar or new

At times it’s compression

Sometimes it’s release

Percussive as drumbeats

Random as tweets

It’s the wind in the treetops

And the splash of the creek

And sometimes, if you see her

It’s in a hula dancer’s lithe feet

And quavering arms that entreat

So we watched and we smiled

The players, they played

And we all were transfixed

As she danced the night’s songs

In her own special way

The Peace of Paradise
There was a little piece of paradise
In the valley down the road
Where trees grew tall and we laughed out loud
As we watched each other grow
And no-one used to lock their doors
Since everyone was friends
Swimming in the golden sun at the old swimming hole
Those summers never seemed to end
And Susan asked where Billy went
And if he’d take her there
‘Cuz like us all she thought the world
Began beyond somewhere
But little did we know, little did we think
That our old town was all we needed
Just a little piece of paradise
In the valley down the road
On Friday nights we’d cruise the ‘dub
And race on Harris Road
Or meet with friends at the Twinkle Inn
And go to the Starlight for the show
It was a time of sock-hops then
With bobbysox and lettermen
The local bands could do no wrong
We knew all the words to all the songs
The stores wore familiar local names
Not global franchises or parts of chains
But they gave us jobs and things besides
Not just the goods but local pride
A little piece of paradise
In the valley down the road
Where trees grew tall and we laughed out loud
As we watched each other grow
Trailrides through timeless forests
Building forts and climbing trees
Neighbourhood games of kick the can
Unfettered, fearless and so free
When the days grew cold and the nights grew long
There’d be skating on the frozen ponds
Or sliding on the snowy golf course slopes
And cars parked at the top of the world would steam with all the loving
And we laughed out loud and we lived so proud
As the world went on its way
And time marched on and the wheel turned
And some of us moved away
From a little piece of paradise
In the valley down the road
Where trees grew tall and we laughed out loud
As we’d watched each other grow
